What are the stages of video production?

Any video production project is a multi-staged process. Each stage of the video production process presents its own challenges for the team to tackle but with proper planning and the right tools you can save yourself a few headaches. Here are the different stages of video production you'll go through as well as the tools you might use:

  1. Pre-production
  2. Production
  3. Post-Production

Pre-production

The pre-production phase is you're planning stage. This is where you are story boarding and figuring out the tools and staff you'll need to meet your goals. Early on is all over the map. I mean, I've got customers. I've got a lot of friends that use everything from One Note to, Monday.com for their pre-production. There's applications that are specifically designed for story boarding. But I mean, you can use a notebook to do pre-production plan everything out organize everything.

Production

Lights! Camera! Action! This is where the your video starts to come to life. Your videographers and production crew are hard at work shooting footage and collecting clips. That's where you see a lot of the tools that you might see at NAB that's where you have your cameras, workstations and various VFX and Graphics applications.

Post Production

Once your team has finished capturing video footage it is time to edit it all together in post. Here your editors, colorists and graphics artists are bringing your project to life.  During post production, you're still using your workstations, but you're moving a little bit from creating content from scratch and into let's put this content together. You also need to be considering where you are storing and backing up your files as you work on the project.
