How long do NVMe drives last?

When you are purchasing storage drives for your video team there are a few things to consider.

  1. Capacity
  2. Performance
  3. Cost
  4. Durability/ Lifespan
For this article we will focus on the lifespan of NVMe drives in particular.

There are multiple types of storage on the market that include standard spinning disk drives and solid state drives (SSDs). SSDs are the fastest of the drive types because they don't rely on moving physical parts to perform their read/write operations.

SSDs have two different communication standards, SATA and NVMe. SATA drives provide fast read/write speeds and are very reliable for storage systems. NVMe drives are the relatively new kid on the block. These drives were designed to replace the SATA technology with the higher bandwidth PCIe technology. This upgrade can result in 4x read/write speeds and 10x seek speeds than a SATA drive.

So how long will a NVMe drive last? There are some NVMe models on the market that claim a guaranteed lifespan of 800TB for their 1TB model and 1200TB for their 2TB model. They also claim 1.5 million hours mean time between failures and back it up with a 5 year warranty.

If you're looking for long lasting performance from your storage drives, NVMe is the future and you should be exploring how you can integrate them into your current storage solution.
