I was talking to a customer yesterday and he asked what I think the best backup format is.

That's a loaded question because there's commonly 3 ways to do it.

  1. LTO
  2. Cloud
  3. Disk to Disk

Each has its own upsides and downsides. We'll dig into the different options and the ups and downs of using each one.

LTO

Upsides:

  1. Low Cost/ Terabyte
  2. Can be stored on a shelf or in a LTO library
  3. Low power consumption
  4. Perfect for incremental backup

Downsides:

  1. Slow to pull data from
  2. Hardware issues kill your speed
  3. Not a common piece of technology

Cloud

Upsides:

  1. Unlimited Storage Space
  2. Off-site storage
  3. Disaster recovery

Downsides:

  1. Always have to pay monthly for storage
  2. Data recovery dependent on internet connection
  3. Can be slow during upload/download

Disk to Disk

Upsides:

  1. Fastest Option
  2. Many options for data copy
  3. Low budget

Downsides:

  1. A more "Bootstrap" method for backup
