Welcome

Welcome to our first HD Educational Series newsletter! This newsletter is an extension of our ProMAX lab, where we test out new equipment, software and hardware solutions to help you work smarter, faster and more efficient in your projects.

Every couple of weeks our professional technical staff will be writing this newsletter and sharing with you the latest technical information, updates and how-tos.

In this, our first, newsletter, we wanted to talk to you about the latest in HD cameras. You know you want to jump into the HD band wagon, but you need more information before you jump in!

We highly recommend you don’t purchase any of these cameras (from us or anyone else) until you learn more about them because you need to consider how a particular camera will affect your current workflow, especially, if your current workflow is a tape based one.

We hope you enjoy this new newsletter and please send us your feedback ! We really do care about what you think!

Panasonic HPX170
Fully solid-state, the two-slot HPX170 is a 1080p capable camcorder that offers the compelling advantages of P2 technology including: no moving parts unlike tape, hard disk drive, or disc-based systems; instant random access to recorded HD or SD content; a faster IT compatible file-based workflow; and the ability to operate in harsh environments with resistance to temperature extremes, shock and vibration.

Sony EX1
Designed from the ground up to exploit the ultimate high performance of SxS PRO memory cards, the PMW-EX1 combines a state-of-the-art, non-linear XDCAM workflow with simply the best HD quality yet seen in a compact camcorder. It is also the first handheld camcorder to carry the legendary CineAlta 24P brand with multiple frame rate recording capability such as 59.94i, 50i, and native 23.98P, as well as being 1080i/720P switchable.

JVC GY-HM100
The GY-HM100U is a Compact Handheld camcorder with performance and features found only in larger and more expensive models. It's designed to be easy to use, making it ideal for news reporters and producers. Seasoned shooters will find that its small size lets them work in environments where larger cameras would be impractical-all while producing recordings on par with broadcast cameras.

My Experience Using The Sony EX1 Tapeless HD Camera
By Marcelo Lewin - ProMAX Director of Interactive Media; Pixel Heads Network General Manager
marcelo@pixelheadsnetwork.com

Besides managing the marketing and website for ProMAX, I’m also the founder and General Manager of Pixel Heads Network, which is now part of ProMAX. We have 3 shows for digital media creators, but the one where I used the new Sony EX1 is for the EXPOzed Show (Check out EXPOzedShow.com when you have a moment).

Having shot 5 conferences / events this year so far (Macworld, CES, Cinners, 23rd Annual ASC Awards Show and HD Expo) with the Sony EX1, I have to tell you that I love the tapeless format.

Prior to the Sony EX1, I was on the Canon XH-A1 (still a pretty good camera...at least for the kind of show I’m shooting). Although the Canon XH-A1 is a great camera, the tape format, in my own opinion is pretty much dead (I know I’m going to get hate mail on this....but like I said...it’s just my opinion). The Sony EX1 is fully tapeless (read into this...no moving parts...no tape heads...no tape heads to clean...yeah!!!)

Besides the fact that you don’t have to carry tapes or worry about cleaning the tape heads, the thing I hate the most about the tape format is that to capture into Final Cut Pro (or for that matter any other NLE including Avid), you have to capture live. That is, if you shot one hour of footage (which I usually do in a show), then you have to sit through one hour of capture.

[Read more in our blog] or tell us [what’s your opinion on Tape vs. Tapeless?]
